If you need to temporarily drive a van or car then you can get a temporary van insurance policy that allows you to drive a van for up to 28 days. You can of course get cover for just a single day where 1 day van insurance will allow you to drive a van up to 7.5 tonnes.
Daily van insurance is a relatively new way to insure yourself to drive. It is available online from many specialist short term insurers and is designed for those drivers who only need to drive a vehicle for a short period of time. It can be used when you borrow a van from a friend or a relative, if you are test driving a vehicle or renting it. You can insure yourself if you have just purchased a new or used van and need to be able to drive it home.
Whilst this is undoubtedly a very useful type of insurance policy it is unfortunate that at the moment that getting temporary van insurance under 21 is not possible. Due to the short term nature of this type of insurance it is not economically viable for insurers to provide cover over the short term for young drivers.
Anyone under 25 is grouped in the high risk group by insurers as they are more likely to make a claim on their insurance. It is therefore no longer possible to insure yourself to drive a vehicle if you are under this age.
Whilst you cannot get a daily insurance policy you can however take out insurance to cover yourself to drive a vehicle such as a van or a car by the month. A pay as you go no deposit monthly insurance policy allows you to buy insurance cover for a month at a time. Drivers as young as 17 can get this type of cover so it makes it the only legal option for young drivers other than getting a full years annual policy.
